One of the premium Film Festivals of USA, The New York Film Festival has revealed its Currents lineup for the 2025 edition — a section dedicated to bold, unconventional voices and experimental storytelling from around the globe. This year’s selection spans 16 feature Films and 24 shorts representing 28 countries, highlighting a spectrum of inventive cinematic approaches.

The centrepiece of Currents will be the U.S. premiere of Ben Rivers’ Mare’s Nest, which Film at Lincoln Centre, the presenter of the Film Festival, describes as a mysterious, post-apocalyptic road movie set in a world ruled entirely by children. Film Festival artistic director Dennis Lim noted that the program stands out in today’s often formulaic film landscape, celebrating Filmmakers who are reviving older technologies, challenging newer ones, and reshaping cinematic language to explore both history and the present day.

Among the lineup are notable premieres: Sharon Lockhart’s Windward will debut globally, while several features — including Tsai Ming-liang’s Back Home/Hui Jia, Lucio Castro’s Drunken Noodles, and Masao Adachi’s Escape/Toso — will have their North American premieres. Other Films, such as Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani’s Bouchra and Rhayne Vermette’s Levers, will screen for the first time in the U.S.

The Film Festival had previously announced its main slate, headlined by Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt as the opening night Film, Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother as the centerpiece, and Bradley Cooper’s Is This Thing On? closing the event. The main slate also features works by Filmmakers like Jafar Panahi, Kathryn Bigelow, Noah Baumbach, Kelly Reichardt, and Laura Poitras.

The 63rd edition of NYFF will run from September 26 to October 13, offering audiences a mix of daring new works, star-studded premieres, and thought-provoking cinema from across the world.
