Director's Biography

Roberto started out with his first Horror Short Film "Herdeiros do Solar the Usher" (1988), based on Edgar Allan Poe's novel "Fall of the House of Usher", is part of the book "80's The Gold Decade Of The Horror Movie" 2011, written by Matteo Tortora. He directed two successful TV Series for Globo TV in Brazil, and became Artistic Director for the Cisneros TV Group in Miami. He's received many awards for his filmmaking both in Brazil and abroad. Roberto takes much of his inspiration from fantastic and classic horror narratives. His short films bring to mind Edgar Allan Poe, Guy de Maupassant, André Gide. He specializes in using every facet of film production -- from lighting to art direction and soundtrack -- to create a signature dark style far from the mainstream. His work has been compared to John Waters, Paul Morrissey and Pedro Almodovar. He's developed several co-productions for the US in English language. The Movie "RGB", Official Selection at the 2005 New York Independent Film Festival, was a collaboration with directors in Brazil, Thailand and Croatia produced by Unique Entertainment. Director of "The Meeting" an English-spoken short film, a co-production Brazil/US. Official Selection at Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival 2010, LA; 10th DeadCenter Film Festival 2010, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma."Noturno" 2011, Director, Producer. Jabor's last Feature Film "Anima Sola" (director/producer/screenwriter) has won 23 awards and 21 officially selections/nominations for many festivals in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Roberto Jabor is currently in pre-production of “House of Santeria” to be shot in 2020, South California, written and produced by Beau Yotty, directed and produced by Roberto Jabor.

Director's Statement

Brazilian’s cinematography barely has Horror Movies, it has some “horror comedies” from the 80’s. In the last decades we don’t find this genre made in Brazil.

Down here, I’ve been pushing myself to work with the real Horror/Thriller/Mystery American style movies. I started out my carrier in the late 80’s with a short film based on the American writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe.

In my research of the myth of Anima Sola, I found it present in several Gospels, such as “The Thirst of Christ”. The Anima Sola is taken to represent a soul suffering in purgatory. In the most commonly known image of the Anima Sola, a woman is depicted as breaking free from her chains in a dungeon setting surrounded by flames, representing purgatory. She appears penitent and reverent, and her chains have been broken, an indication that, after her temporary suffering, she is destined for heaven. Praying to the Anima Sola is a tradition in many ways unlike that of the more widespread cult of saints. In lieu of praying to a saint who then appeals to God, the Anima Sola represents souls in purgatory who require the assistance both of the living and the divine to ameliorate their infernal sufferings

The first appearance of Anima Sola in American Movies was in the horror/Thriller feature film “Gothika”, 2003, with Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr, and Penelope Cruz. The character of Penelope Cruz, Chloe Sava, as a Latin character, brings up the myth of Anima Sola in the story.

In the feature film “Anima Sola”, I tried to bring back the “old horror/thriller style”, not gore, of films such as the original “The Haunting” (directed by the Oscar winner Robert Wise with Julie Harris and Claire Bloom), John Carpenter’s movies from the late 70’s and early 80’s, and Stephen King’s “The Shinning”.

“Anima Sola” focus less on special effects, and more on story, acting and art direction.
