Director's Statement
I first met legendary New Zealand photographer and publisher and publisher Grant Sheehan when I was fortunate enough to rent a small corner of his studio in central Wellington back in 2003. Over time, observing him at work and his astounding imagery and prolific creations, the idea of this film slowly germinated...
'Grant Sheehan: Light, Ghosts & Dreams' is a labour-of-love film shot over a five-year period across Aotearoa New Zealand (and throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, when alert levels allowed). It's been a joyful collaboration with Grant himself and a committed core team of creatives, including musicians/composers Rhian Sheehan (Grant's son), Tyaan Singh, and Grammy Award winner Jim "Kimo" West.
Grant's openness in sharing his creative processes and experiences opens a window into larger questions about humanity, artistry, and technology. His uncanny ability to be at the forefront of new technologies is truly inspirational, from his night-photography and drone-photography to his ground-breaking visual AI explorations for his multi-faceted project 'Does Ava Dream?'
The collaborative process of making this film has been a uniquely uplifting experience as a filmmaker, which I feel permeates through the film itself. The kaleidoscopic-style was born out of my roots in experimental filmmaking.
It's been a privilege to be able to hare Grant's exquisite soulful images on the big screen, which are the hero of the film. As we are transported throughout New Zealand and across world, the film invites us to reflect on our place in the universe through Grant’s unique lens and artistry.
