Director's Statement
Director’s Statement about the Film:
“My childhood hobby has become an addiction.
The spark in addiction has resulted in passion.
Though my passion isn't related to my profession,
But my mission has silently enriched my vision”.
The prime aim and objective of MM Production is to produce good quality Videos and Contents that will directly or indirectly support the overall growth of the Santal Social System and promote their language, literature, culture, and tradition worldwide. Team MM Production consists of a group of like-minded people. We are working with minimum resources and limited manpower to fulfill our purpose.
I am Shyama Sundar Majhi, the Director of the Short Film KUKLI. This film is produced under the banner of MM Production in July 2019. I belong from an Indigenous Community: the Santal Community. The story of my film is picturized on an underprivileged little girl who descends from the indigenous Santal Community of rural India. I'm very well acquainted with the grass-root reality of my community. Through this film, I want to show the world about the Santali culture, tradition, social system, the pain, and suffering of my Santal Community.
Basically, I belong from a technical Profession and I possess an engineering background. Neither did I have studied in the film institution nor have attended any film making workshop in my life. In my Short Film "KUKLI", not a single trained artist has been cast. Almost everybody is from my village and most of them are my family members and relatives. That was a big challenge for me on how to get the work done effectively and efficiently. Working with a child artist who has never been professionally trained, is really a very tough task for the Director. In my Film, the main character is a little girl child who knew nothing about acting and of course film shooting. The hard work of my team has reflected on the success of our film "KUKLI". Till now my film has won 67 National and International Awards out of 83 Official Selected Film Festivals across 13 Countries. It is not a matter of awards, but it is sure that my film is successfully highlighting a strong social message on humanity, anti-war, pain, and suffering of the tribal lives even in present India.
The golden words about the film KUKLI by the great film personalities from around the world:
“While blurring the line between the fiction and the non-fiction, the film, through spatial-temporal-sonic cinematographic chhand creates a fragile, precarious equilibrium through a child’s innocence; her question about violence, war and destruction of nature awaits answer from the so-called modern, civilized world!”
Mr. Amrit Gangar (Indian film scholar, historian, critic, curator and writer from Mumbai - Jury of SARAN International Film Festival 2019, Bihar, India.)
“This film has a very rare representation of unique tribal life. We are not habituated to hear their language and it's a unique representation of the language. Of course, the language is just the choice of telling the story. The film has a very sensitive approach to the unspoken joy and sadness of the child. The film dealt with deliberate peace and calmness. One might think that the film is taking the patience of the audience, but it's a deliberate attempt. The actors are non trained actors but still able to create a real experience on screen. We would love to see more films from the Tribal World. And who will make them? It's they themselves.”
Mr. Vikrant Pawar (Writer and Director - Jury of ICONOCLAST 2020, A National Level Film Festival, Navi Mumbai, India.)
“……Really a terrific job by the cast. GREAT color, camera work and of course - solid edit...All the technical and creative aspects are there...The imagery is just fabulous...
But as a piece of film making - probably the best submission (and we've had dozens), from India.”
Mr. Brian McLane (Writer and Director - Jury of Transparent Film Festival 2019,
New York, United States.)
“Your Film Is A Message To The Nation To Live In Harmony and Peace. Your Film Has A Message To Spread Love To Each Other and It Motivates The People In This Situation To Follow Brotherhood and Fight Against Discrimination and Hatred In Society , Which Is The Need Of The Hour.”
Mr. Shubham Apurwa (Festival Director - New Normal International Film Festival 2020,
Surat, Gujarat, India.)
" Pukli is the name of the child ... If Kukli is the question... It draws attention to the problem of human and war through the innocent question of a child. Chicken and chicks, dogs and puppies, parents' instincts to protect their children... the importance of school... Ignorance, poverty... Simple and brilliant expression"
Jury of ISTANBUL FILM AWARDS 2020, Turkey, Istanbul.
‘Kukli’ is a short film which speaks about the humanity as well as the social economic reality of Santal communities . In this selfish world sometimes we forget or don’t understand the mindset of children and even the importance of education. Kukli’s family lives hand to mouth and even Kukli has stopped to go school due to poverty apart from everyone Kukli’s thoughts and judgment are different and everyone fails to understand , what is the psychological problem of Kukli . The question of Kukli is not only to her father it’s the question to all about Humanity . So, children are the still hope for our future world .This is the main message of the film. The direction is quite good and the photography as well as the editing are the best part of this film . I wish all the success of ‘Kukli’ .
Mr. KM Taj-Biul Hasan (Filmmaker, Dhaka, Bangladesh)
