Director's Statement
Storybook Man is the fifth music video I have been fortunate enough to be funded to create by Walkingstick Music for songwriter/singer Dwight L. Wilcox, II.
I hope the viewer will see the thoughts of this common man and hear how he believes all women want an idealized man. By the end, I hope to show that his thoughts are the true reason he doesn't notice when women do like him.
Working with Dwight is always fun because I have creative control over the style as well as my interpretation of his lyrics and sound.
I start with headphones and pencil sketches. Storybook Man sounds bluesy and bubblegum pink to me. I like to use simple color palettes and paper textures to achieve a hand-drawn print illustration feel. In this case, I chose to use cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, the colors used for printing storybooks.
I use a Wacom Tablet to draw the assets in Illustrator. Finally, I use Adobe Animate to put the film together.
I hope viewers will question the notion of what women really want while sympathizing with the poor guy. He just doesn't realize that he is someone's Storybook Man.
