The story of Xubala revolves around a poor Assamese village family residing in the interior villages of Assam. The family consists of a widowed mother, her two daughters and a deaf and dumb son is subjected to extreme poverty asthe father dies at an early age leaving the family nothing but their own hut to reside. The middle child named Xubala is the main protagonist of the film from whose perspective the story is told. Exposed to extreme poverty, Xubala's childhood consisted of hunger, deceit, isolation, deprivation of education, physical and emotional abuse. Her widowed mother in her effort to feed her children is raped repeatedly by the headman of the village in order to borrow money while she was pregnant with her son turns cold stone when the son accidently dies at a very young age. She starts feeling that her daughters are a burden to her and the only way to feed them is to sell them into the flesh trade in order to survive. Xubala seeing her elder sister being sold off to some unknown person, resists her mother's motive towards her when her mother stars inviting customers at home. She seeks rescue with an old visiting lady from the city who lures her a better and safe life away from her mother. But as fate has it, Xubala lands up in a brothel run by the old lady who happens to be an aging pimp herself. Even after Xubala's repeated attempts to run away and save herself from a life of sin, she is brutally physically and sexually assaulted. With time Xubala has no choice but to give herself in to become a full time prostitute and earn her living. But her struggles continue when she starts prostitutes and the adversities that follow there thereafter. A gleam of positivity enters her life when she finds true love in a broker of the brothel. In the pretext of marrying her, she is lured out of the market just to work exclusively for her disguised lover. Deceived and exploited, Xubala returns to her own community, only to find that her aging body is no longer desired even in the brothel and thus she fades away in the glimmering lights of the red light area to an unknown darkness.
