In a parallel world, three mourners sing and mourn the death of a popular culture master. The crying produces a surprising cathartic effect and the deceased gets up in the middle of the wake. He had had a cataleptic crisis.
The Last Day is Armando Lôbo's second opera-film. Freely inspired by a legendary episode involving one of Pernambuco's greatest popular music composers, Levino Ferreira, the micro-opera discusses in a dramatic and acidic way the universe of popular culture, the sense redemption, the carnivalization of death. As an opera-poetry, or audiovisual “poemopera”, The Last Day has a very multifaceted format, combining theater, cinema, poetry, performance, music and artistic dance. The conceptual content of the work also has multiple references: Brazilian playwright Nelson Rodrigues, Sigmund Freud (Totem and Taboo), Mikhail Bakhtin and the great Portuguese poet Antero de Quental.
