In fact, the first-ever successful voiceover was recorded by reginald fessenden. As well as being 28 years earlier than disney's steamboat willie in 1900, it wasn't intended for tv or film purposes. So, with over a century since the first voiceover, let's explore the history from 1900 to the present day.

Voice over is a production technique where a voice is recorded for off-screen use. While prominently used to reference movies and television, voice over can also be used for telephone services, along with other informational service. The question of whether it’s “voiceover” or “voice over” is that you will usually see it as “voice over.” So, just to be safe, always make sure there’s a space between the two words.

Movie trailers were extremely widespread by this point; that includes tv advertising of the latest motion pictures. Voice overs got a huge boost in this area, as they became very famous and well-known in pop culture.

Advancements in technology also resulted in more people talking on the telephone. This meant that scripted voice overs would now be relayed over the phone; instead of a live human speaking you could get a pre-recorded voice. These types of “on hold” calls became extremely common, further opening the field that voice actors could enter.

While there are actors who almost exclusively do animation work, there are plenty who lend their voice to all sorts of videos and audio-only projects. It’s become a sort of freelance arena where someone can easily get work from all over and provide their voice without having to go into a studio.

Successful voice actors possess a diverse range of vocal abilities, including the capacity to manipulate pitch, tone, pacing and delivery to suit the requirements of different characters or projects. They also need to be skilled at interpreting scripts, taking direction from film directors or producers, and adapting their performances to fit the context of the project.

Voice acting requires a combination of technical proficiency, creativity and the ability to convey a character's emotions and personality solely through the voice. It's a dynamic and competitive field, and voice actors often need to audition for roles and continually develop their craft to stay relevant in the film industry.
