Denotation

Accent lighting, also called highlighting, emphasizes objects by focusing light directly on them. Accent lighting is used inside and outside the home to feature locations such as an entrance or to create dramatic effects. Points of visual interest can be created by highlighting artwork, fireplaces, plants, textured walls, or architectural details. However, overuse can create a space that appears to be disorganized or cluttered.

Description

By shining light directly on items, accent lighting, also known as highlighting, draws attention to them. Accent lighting is used both inside and outside the house to draw attention to particular areas, such an entryway, or to produce striking effects. You may draw attention to architectural elements, plants, fireplaces, artwork, textured walls, and more to create points of visual interest.

On the other hand, excessive usage can make a room look cluttered or disorderly. Achieving accent lighting involves placing directional fixtures or bulbs in the right places. It is best to put these fixtures close to the thing they are meant to illuminate. By employing the right mounting positions, aiming angles, and fixtures with baffles or shields to block the view of the light source, you may eliminate both direct and reflected glare.

Install separate controls for accent fixtures so they can be used only when needed and sensitive objects such as photographs and artwork are exposed to less light. Create effective accent lighting and save energy by reducing the ambient light in the space surrounding the accented object. Additionally, choose background colors that contrast strongly with the highlighted object to reduce the light output required to achieve a dramatic effect.
