Denotation
In photography or theater, background lighting is a controlled lighting method where a light is positioned behind or at an angle to an item, person, or scene to create effects like depth or subject-background separation.
Description
Background lighting is mainly used for illuminating the background area of a set. Separation between the topic and the backdrop will also be provided by the background light. Many lighting configurations use a three- or four-point lighting arrangement. With the addition of a backdrop light, four-point lighting is the same as three-point lighting. The background light is the final to be added in a four-point lighting setup and is often positioned directly behind the subject and focused at the backdrop. Filmmakers may give their images a feeling of depth by adding a background light to a scene.
The background lighting in movies is often of a lesser intensity. To evenly illuminate a background or, conversely, to accentuate places of interest, more than one light may be employed.
Due to the fact that video cameras are less equipped to handle high contrast ratios, the background light in video and television is often of a similar intensity as the main light. The backdrop light will include a color filter, like blue, to bring out the foreground and provide the much-needed distinction between topic and background.
