Denotation

An extreme close-up shot frames a subject very closely, often so much so that the outer portions of the subject are cut off by the edges of the frame. On an actor, this is commonly used to show specific portions of the body, like the face or hip, but it can go closer to show only an actor’s mouth, or even a single eye. Inanimate objects can also be framed in an extreme close-up shot, but everything is based on the scale and size of the object. If you were to frame a steaming tea-pot in an extreme close-up, you might focus on the spout or base. The idea is that you cannot see the entire subject, but rather are forced to focus on a particular portion, hopefully, for the desired effect.

Description

An extreme close-up (ECU) in filmmaking refers to a shot in which the camera tightly frames a subject, capturing only a small portion of scene.  Typically emphasizing specific details such as facial expressions, objects or textures. This type of shot is characterized by its intense focus on minute elements often to convey emotions, emphasize a critical plot point or provide the audience with an intimate view of the subject.

In an extreme close-up the subject occupies the majority of the frame, leaving little or no surrounding context. This level of magnification allows filmmakers to highlight subtle nuances, expressions or intricate details that might be missed in wider shots. Extreme close-ups are powerful tools for directors and Cinematographers to intensify the emotional impact of a scene and draw the audience's attention to specific elements that contribute to the narrative.

The use of extreme close-ups is not only limited to capturing human faces. It can also be applied to inanimate objects, creating a sense of significance or symbolism. The visual Intensity of an extreme close-up can evoke a strong emotional response from the audience, making it a valuable cinematic technique for storytelling and visual communication.
