Denotation

In time-lapse photography, the frame rate—or the frequency at which film frames are recorded is substantially lower than the frequency at which the sequence is seen. Played at standard speed, time seems to be slipping away faster.

Description

Time-lapse film photography is a cinematic technique in which the frequency at which film frames are captured (the frame rate) is much lower than the frequency used to view the films sequence. When played at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing. For example, an image of a film scene may be captured at 1 frame per second but then played back at 30 frames per second, the result is an apparent 30 times speed increase. Similarly, films can also be played at a much lower rate than at which it was captured which slows down an otherwise fast action as in slow motion or high-speed photography.

Processes that would normally appear subtle and slow to the human eye such as the motion of the sun and stars in the sky or the growth of a plant become very pronounced. Time-lapse is the extreme version of the cinematography technique of undercranking. Stop motion animated film is a comparable technique a subject that does not actually move, such as a puppet, can repeatedly be moved manually by a small distance and photographed. Then, the photographs can be played back as films at a speed that shows the subject appearing to move.

A time-lapse video is created by taking photos at regular intervals to record changes that would be too slow for the human eye to see. A series of still images is captured over a period of hours, days, weeks or even months and then sped up into minutes or seconds in order to show how quickly things change.

By utilizing a slower shutter speed and allowing the exposure process to be drawn out, photography can give the impression of motion within a still image. There are many simple ways to raise your time lapse photography game such as using a time lapse calculator or a time lapse app.

Time lapses are a popular filmmaking technique because they can visually condense lengthy processes into short films or visually compelling sequences. They add a dynamic and engaging element to storytelling, allowing filmmakers to showcase the passage of time in a creative and visually appealing way.
