Even though it is still relatively new, Macedonia's film industry has progressively woven a rich culture of cinematic storytelling. Filmmakers have found enough of material to work with thanks to the country's distinctive fusion of history, culture, and modern issues.
Following World War II, Macedonian cinema gained momentum with the founding of Film Skopje and Vardar Film, following in the footsteps of the Manaki brothers, who pioneered the genre with their early 20th-century documentaries. Early cinematic classics included "Miss Stone" (1958) and Frosina(1952).
But the 1990s were a watershed year. The 1994 film Before the Rain by Milcho Manchevski received praise from all around the world and was nominated for an Academy Award. This movie demonstrated Macedonian cinema's potential for international film distribution, as did others like as Darko Mitrevski's Bal-kan-kan(2005).
Macedonian cinema has experienced a boom in recent years. Co-directed by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov, the 2019 documentary "Honeyland" received critical acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award. Macedonia's cinematic reputation has been further enhanced by this movie and other works like as Teona Strugar Mitevska's "God Exists, Her Name is Petrunya (2019).
