Apa khabar ! How are you?
My name is Ray Lee , I am a film producer and director from Malaysia. I am submitting my Borneo Zombies feature film entitled โBELABAN HIDUP โINFEKSI ZOMBIE (FIGHT FOR LIFE-ZOMBIE INFECTION) to your festival.
'BELABAN HIDUP' is a Dayak native language means 'Fight For Life' and Dayak people live in the Borneo Island for thousand year. This is my first international film festival feature film submission, in this film we have showcase many indigenous people's called 'The Iban Warrior' battle with Zombies in the island of Borneo. We hired many indigenous people to become our actors and crews, we travel about 200km from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and 20km into the deep forest to begin our production on April 2019.We manage to complete our whole movie in June 2020.
We have hired some of the inexperience actors from the Dayak tribe from Sarawak as well as some experience local and international actors such as Pekin Ibrahim, Pablo Amirul, Altimet (Malaysia), Katrina Grey (Slovakia) and Tegar (Indonesia) as well. All our indigenous actors are mostly first timer and volunteers, helping the production of this movie with unconditional love and working with us with little salary. This is the first ever Borneo feature horror film in Dayak language ever produced in Malaysia. We been planning this movie since 2016, we shot a short film in 2016 and uploaded in YouTube and present to some funder, and since then we secure some private funders and some government fund to kick start this feature film. Our film is funded by National Development Film Corporation of Malaysia, an agency owned by The Ministry of Multimedia and Communication of Malaysia.
The uniqueness of this movie is all shot in Borneo rainforest. All scene shooting in a natural deep forest without any green screen or CGI. All props are genuine and authentic made by the Dayak people. We have so many challenges during the shooting, we have to cross the river, sleeping in the jungle, transport our equipment using 4WD, facing the danger of some poisonous snake and insects, shooting in bad weathers (thunderstorm) and many more.
I hope the international film community can lend us a great support and recognized our hard work in order for us to continue our journey as a film maker in Borneo Island, Malaysia.
Best Wishes and Stay Safe!

KUALA LUMPUR: Local indie film Belaban Hidup: Infeksi Zombie, has done the country proud by winning the Horror and Science Fiction category for the feature film genre at the 2021 World Film Carnival (WFC) - Singapore.
This was disclosed on the WFC Singaporeโs website on March 18.
Produced by Hornbill Films Sdn Bhd and Harry Aziz Entertainment Sdn Bhd, the film tells the story of a group of orphans who is locked away by a mad scientist for an experiment.
Besides combining elements of horror and action, the film which received funding from the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) also highlights the culture as well tradition of the Dayak community in Sarawak.
Its producer and director Ray Lee said he and Misha Minut who is also the co-producer and scriptwriter of the film first came up with the idea to make the film in 2016.
โAt first, we just wanted to produce a short film but it ended up being a feature-length film.
โWe decided to make a film about Dayak warriors in Sarawak as we rarely see such film being produced,โ he told Bernama.
Lee said, there are also several scenes in the film where viewers can see actors speak in the Iban language.
Meanwhile, he said the film has also been nominated in two categories, namely Best Film and Best Horror Film at the International Symbolic Art Film Festival in Russia, which will take place on March 27.
Belaban Hidup: Infeksi Zombie features a line-up of actors such as Pekin Ibrahim, Altimet, Pablo Amirul, Anna Melissa, Cassidy Panggau and Katrina Grey.

After win in Singapore, Sarawak-made zombie flick hopes to sink teeth into Russia, US film fests
KUCHING (Mar 22): Malay-Iban language movie โBelaban Hidup: Infeksi Zombieโ (Fight for Life: Zombie Infection) is making waves around the world after picking up the Best Feature Film award at the 2021 World Film Carnival in Singapore on March 19.
Produced and directed by Ray Lee, the movie has been selected for nomination for the Best Feature Film and Best Horror awards at the International Symbolic Art Film Festival (ISAFF) in St Petersburg, Russia.
On top of that, the feature length movie made in 2016, is also getting a nomination at the Los Angeles Marina Del Rey Film Festival (LAMDRFF), Lee told The Borneo Post.
Among the actors in the film are Sarawakians Misha Minut, Anna Melissa and Cassidy Panggau.
The movieโs cast also include Pablo Amirul, Pekin Ibrahim, Altimet and Nelissa Nizam from Peninsular Malaysia, Katrina Grey of โHard Targetโ from the UK, and from Indonesia, Tegar.
Lee said his wife Misha, an Orang Ulu from Limbang, was the movieโs script writer and also assisted him to produce and direct it.
Asked what motivated them to produce the movie, Lee said he and his wife had produced a short film in 2016 about pirates against the Iban people and they were inspired by the beauty and uniqueness of the traditional, Baju Gagung, the Iban warrior vest.
โTherefore I suggest to Misha to write a full feature movie script about the battle of the pirates with Iban warriors and later we changed the story to battle of Dayak warriors with the Zombies.โ
The Iban longhouse was chosen as a setting because they felt that no other movie in Malaysia featured Dayak warriors fighting against zombies yet, he said.
โWe are the first serious horror zombie film that involved tribal people. We feel the flora and fauna, the tradition of Baju Gagung and the longhouse will make our movie different than any commercial movie in Malaysia.
โWe feel the Dayak culture will give us an epic feel in our movie and we also feel that the world is curious about Sarawak Dayak culture. That is why we combined modern and traditional costume for the film about zombies with Dayak warriors in battle. We hope we can surprise Malaysia and the world film industry,โ Lee said.
Lee said he and his wife had invested in the movie since the project started as a short film which was then proposed to the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) for a grant to shoot the full movie.
โThis movie has made Malaysians proud particularly, Sarawakians. We generate so much job opportunities and create many top positions for the Sarawak film makers such as producers, wardrobe designers, make up artists, actors, actresses and editors.โ
โFifty per cent of our crew are from Sarawak. Misha in particular is from Limbang Sarawak, first Dayak lady feature film producer. Misha has been active in local film indusrty for almost 10 years,โ said Lee.
He revealed that he and his wife were now preparing to shoot another movie based on the Dayak culture for a local television station.
When contacted, Misha said โBelaban Hidup: Infeksi Zombieโ was expected to hit the cinemas by end of the year but depending on the pandemic situation.
He said the movie was currently being screened at film festivals in the US, the UK, Japan, Singapore, Canada, Turkey, Russia, Greece, Slovakia, France, Germany, Italy, India, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden, Argentina, and Puerto Rico.
โThese film festivals will watch and evaluate our movie. So far we have won one award from Singapore, got two nominations from Russia and one from the US. We hope to get as many nominations and awards as we can. After that we will screen it on television,โ she said.
Misha said: โIโm very proud to portray Sarawak culture, especially Dayak culture in the film and show it to the world.โ
โBelaban Hidup: Infeksi Zombieโ is about a Russian scientist who triggered a zombie-like epidemic after he used indigenous people as part of his experiments. The plot follows an assistant of the scientist who escapes into the jungle to find a vaccine and a group of young Dayaks who fought the zombies.
