Director's Statement
I wrote, directed and executively produced the film, A Survivor Amongst Survivors, to bring to the attention of Men and their loved ones the need to pay attention to the life-limiting disease of Prostate Cancer. In this documentary, the main characters revolve around me; due to my personal experience with the disease. I have experienced depression and ideations of suicide due to this diagnosis. Along the way, I have met several men that have also struggled with these dark thoughts and the sometimes complex side effects of a given medication.
A second main character is Cynthia Dywer, perceived as a carer owing to her experience with her late husband. Caring for a loved one, she presents an emotional, courageous and compelling account of her experience. Several professional health care contributions confirm that black men are disproportionately affected by the disease and must take stock of their lives.
Creating this film helped me deal with the pain that; I have experienced over these past 10-years. It was my intention and hope; that the documentaries would help others as they journey through a similar experience by communicating and having open, honest dialogue with each other.
The focus of my work continues to be to capture and share human-centric stories through various interactive video and video projects.
