Director's Biography

Joydeep Roy Choudhury - a Kolkata-based creative powerhouse juggling the roles of a Program Manager at an IT MNC and an Independent Filmmaker. A Computer Engineer by qualification, but a storyteller at heart, Joydeep first unearthed his knack for intricate narratives in 2014 when he claimed victory at a script writing competition.

What began as a creative escape soon transitioned into a full-blown career, culminating in the creation of four short films spanning budget extremes, from bootstrapped projects to thousand-dollar productions. His cinematic prowess has not only graced the screens of eight international film festivals but also bagged him accolades like Outstanding Achievement, Best Mobile Short, and Best Actress.

In his quest to continuously evolve as a filmmaker, Joydeep relishes learning novel film techniques and immersing himself in global cinema. His dream? To helm a multilingual, sci-fi dystopian web series, studded with the brightest stars of Indian cinema.

Director's Statement

In 'Tarpan', I had the opportunity to bring to life a deeply personal narrative, inspired by Indraroop's touching concept and a beautiful poem. This story, revolving around a man's relationship with his homeland and his father, immediately spoke to me, igniting a desire to take on this intriguing yet immensely challenging project.

Despite working on a shoestring budget with a small crew of four, I was committed to ensuring the characters came alive on screen. Our cast, all newcomers including three child actors, lent an authenticity that I am incredibly proud of. The vibrant city of Kolkata served as our backdrop, merging the pulse of the present with the echoes of the 80s.

I envisioned music not merely as a background element, but as a co-narrator, creating a symphony with the visual storytelling. It was crucial to meticulously design and balance each scene to maintain the narrative flow that happens within a 24-hour timeframe.
