During World War II Poland is kept under German occupation. In the autumn of 1943, a young Jew Emanuel Blatt, a refugee from a nearby ghetto, appears in a Polish monastery, asking for help. German Nazis punish Poles for hiding Jews with death. Monks face the most difficult dilemma. An SS squadron-leader, responsible for the liquidation of the ghetto and the extermination campaign against the Jews, comes to the monastery. "The Day of Wrath" is a full of tension blend of a war thriller and a morality play.
It is a war thriller based on the play written by outstanding Polish writer of Jewish origin Roman Brandstatter. The Holocaust and hope for survival are the main themes of our movie.
“The Day of Wrath” shows complicated interpersonal relationships in extreme conditions in which nothing is as it seems at the beginning.
Catholic monks are not fearless heroes, the hiding Jew is not a passive victim of persecution, and the German SS officer is not a blunt and devoid of feelings monster. Even a blackmailing Polish woman turns out to be an ambiguous figure with a dramatic past. The final confrontation surprises and don’t allow anybody to be indifferent. This is an important and shocking contribution to reflection on responsibility for the Holocaust.
After all, „The Day of Wrath” is a specific musical - part of the drama issue was sung in the Gregorian chant style, but the music is original and specially composed for our production. The movie is also a real confrontation of acting talents. The role of the Conspirator is created by the outstanding Polish actor Daniel Olbrychski (known for "Salt" by P. Noyce). The final effect is enhanced by excellent cinematography.
