I originally wanted to make a short film related to the new coronavirus epidemic, but later I found the topic of epidemic + “Beijing drifter” is very interesting. Many "“Beijing drifter”" people who are already wandering between leaving and staying or have no way to settle down are already facing a lot of unknowns and confusion in their lives, and those who insist on staying in Beijing under the epidemic have a heavier burden of life.
I am also a north drifters, but I have seen a lot of short films of the same subject matter with a kind of "struggle - hardship - success" as the logic of north drifters, I do not think so. Not everyone is so hard, so lucky to achieve their dreams and stay in Beijing, many people also know that they are not the protagonist of the success story. The reason why they stay in Beijing has more complex reasons than the above logic, such as unwillingness, have been accustomed to the life in Beijing, family problems of origin, and life in the hometown, etc., there are more delicate and diverse emotions to tap.
In character design and story design, I removed the ambition, effort and luck of the traditional protagonists at the bottom of the big cities, so that an ordinary person who was already embarrassed chose to lie in order to prevent life from falling into the vortex, but he did not have the ability to recover the consequences of lying, he was just a member of the flow, he would work hard, he would be lazy, he had dreams, but he would also face the reality. In the film, in addition to Ma Ming, who drifts from the north, Xu Yanyan, who finally gives up in Beijing, and David, who is a "foreigner struggling in the United States", they all move forward in a lost and confused way.
