Biography

Jack Kohler is a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe. He’s a graduate of Stanford University. He is currently the Director of the non-Profit On Native Ground as well as the Media Teacher for the UAIC. Jack has been Media Press for SFF the past 11 years. He worked for the American Indian Film Institute’s Tribal Touring program in 2003 - 2005. He’s been an independent producer for Native American Public Telecommunications, now Vision Maker Media, since 2000. Jack was the lead in “Tecumseh” for 5 summers. He won the Eagle Spirit award from AIFF in 2006. He produced “California’s Lost Tribes” and “River of Renewal”, which has aired over 2000 times, for PBS. His awards include Best Documentary Feature for “River of Renewal” and “Once We Had A River.” The feature “Behind the Door of a Secret Girl” has 15 awards to date. Jack also developed a substance abuse, HIV prevention and a smoking prevention video series. Jack's original series "On Native Ground" began airing in 2012 on FNX. The show highlights native role models and offers native youth a place to become broadcast journalists. In 2014 & 15 it won the NAJA Award of Excellence in Television programing. Jack’s short narrative, “K’ina kil” has won 3 awards. Jack was one of the creator's of "Something Inside Is Broken" a Native American Rock Opera which won a NAMA for best rock album and most recently helped produce the short film "Intrepidus."
