Biography

Throughout college and engineering graduate school, Kim MM Isakov spent her days in science labs. Medical school inspired her to channel the essence of the human condition through art. The
sacred privilege of caring for critically ill patients offered rare insights into humanity and nurtured her artist’s soul. The more she pursued photography outside of the hospital, the more she was fascinated by photographs of her patients’ organs. The radiology reading room, its x-rays illuminated in the darkness, was reminiscent of a photography darkroom.

Isakov captures different representations of the human body, from idealized sculptures in galleries to broken skulls in the Paris Catacombs. She draws parallels between photography philosophy and radiography. Drawing from engineering experience, she created an analog projection technique to overlay Rolleiflex photographs and x-rays. These black and white photographs depict a new plane of reality: a hybrid radiology reading room/photography dark room in which she immerses herself and heals broken bodies.

Her photographs have been featured in several New York magazines, including Zagat and Bon Appetit. Her artwork has been displayed internationally, most recently in Seoul in May 2021. She currently lives in New York.
