And you want to write for the big screen? Do you know that screenwriting involves a wide range of writing styles? You cannot limit yourself to a single genre of work. Usually, when writing a screenplay, you are adapting an already published work. The story is more something you are adapting for the screen than something you are writing. This is difficult because you have to condense a book that could take Twenty hours to read into a 2-hour movie. You must be proficient in various writing styles, including that one. I’ll give you 5 more.
To all our fellow Indie Filmmakers, at WFCN we have more than 400 handpicked film festivals where you can submit your precious work of art. You can also showcase your film by making a portfolio in WFCN.
Press Release
What happens when the screenplay is finished? Nothing if you don’t do it yourself, depending on the scope of the production. You must develop communication skills with the media. Press releases are one way of fostering that relationship. Screenwriting is very different from writing a press release. Press releases are written to sound like news, but they are biased and enthusiastic about the project you are showcasing. It successfully bridges the gap between news and marketing.
You must wear multiple hats if your production company is a one-person operation. The marketing hat is one of them. You must have the ability to spread the word about your new endeavour effectively. You cannot wait until the end of production. Almost never are films finished before the initial teaser trailers are created. The marketing process in the film industry begins early. The work includes copywriting and press relations.
Scene Blocking
A fascinating screenplay requires more than a strong narrative and witty dialogue. Additionally, you must grasp the technique of scene blocking. The process of blocking a sequence is similar to choreographing a dance. The characters must be aware of their placement in relationship to other people, things, and the surrounding surroundings. If a vase is not readily available and the target is not sufficiently far away for tossing a vase to sound right, the angry character cannot hurl the vase at the target. The performers and the director will carry it from there if you give them something to work with.
Technical Writing
Your screenwriting will go into the world of technical writing if you plan to write sci-fi. You will require the appropriate technical writing programme for that. To complete the job, you don’t need to be up on all the latest astrophysical theories. However, you might need to hire a one-time specialist to lay out the specifics necessary to adequately explain your McGuffin.
A professional will be helpful for historical and other non-fiction television projects as well as documentaries. You’ll need a qualified explanation for your program on the potential applications of graphene to keep the audience engaged. A technical writer can occasionally be a screenwriter’s best buddy.
Dialogue
A lot of talented authors struggle with dialogue. If your characters have the kind of dialogue that draws viewers in and keeps them interested in the story, you can have exposition that is only competent and yet still pulled off a hit. The voices of the characters must all be distinct. When every character sounds the same, you have a vocal issue. That is a red flag that your personas are not developed enough.
Readers may predict the types of things characters would say in a particular situation when they are fully developed. You will need to use your technical writing talents to make a character who is performing a highly technical task sound realistic.
Grant Writing
A script is free to write. Most likely, you will need to raise funds for the project. You might be able to secure funding for your documentary if the production is historic or educative. Because they can make the distinction between a project being financed and being cancelled, grant writers frequently earn good salaries. You will have a critical source of money for your projects if you learn how to write grants.
You must assume a variety of roles as an independent author in order to complete your tasks. That entails learning techniques for technical, grant, and press writing. If you don’t have these abilities, hiring an expert is less expensive than you may expect.
