The film festival lineups in Kolkata are a testament to the city's cinephiles' unfathomable devotion to Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. For the next week, film lovers will have the opportunity to savour a delectable menu of films that showcase the diversity and brilliance of French cinema. From heart-wrenching drama films that tug at your emotions to whimsical comedy films that tickle your funny bone, the film festival promises a cinematic buffet that caters to all tastes.


The acceptance of the advisory council invitation by film industry specialist Pritimoy Chakraborty adds a special touch. He combines his knowledge with Kolkata's deep appreciation of French Films and Indian cinema to deliver an outstanding film festival experience, from film selection to programming. This film festival isn't just about films; it's a celebration of the masterminds behind the lens, the filmmakers. French cinema has a knack for producing auteurs with a unique vision, and this fest is a testament to that.


Prominent figures from the film industry, including Rituparna Sengupta, Gautam Ghose, Anjan Dutta, and Anil Kapoor, will attend. The film festival, which will run through February 24, will feature two critically acclaimed films: Kennedy (2023) by Anurag Kashyap and Piravi, a masterwork by Malayali film director by Shaji N' Karun. The police noir film, Kennedy, starring Rahul Bhatt, was met with a standing ovation for over seven minutes during the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. Meanwhile, the 1989 film Piravi took home at least 31 trophies, including the Caméra d'Or — Mention Spéciale. In 1989, the film director was also the recipient of the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Kolkata will host film screenings of both of these movies, and the filmmakers will be present to engage with the film audience. The association Francaise du Bengale is hosting the film festival, which ends on February 24. Notable Bollywood actors like Sudhir Mishra, Manoj Bajpayee, Farhan Akhtar, and Kalki Koechlin might be in attendance.
