Senegalese director Mati Diop scores top Berlin award with her film "Dahomey"

A powerful film documentary by young film director Mati Diop, titled "Dahomey," triumphed at the Berlin film festival, surpassing established filmmakers. This one-hour film chronicles the historic return of 26 stolen treasures to Benin, Africa, after nearly 150 years in French possession. "Dahomey" captures the joyous reception in Cotonou, Benin's economic hub, as these priceless artifacts, including a massive throne and animal statues, return home. However, the film also delves deeper, showcasing the concerns of young people who question the fate of the countless objects still housed in French museums, sparking a conversation about the ongoing debate over cultural repatriation.

The 74th Berlin Film Festival saw a surprising result for Dahomey, as Diop, an Iranian film directed by Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha, beat out seasoned filmmakers like Olivier Assayas and Hong Sang-soo to win the Golden Bear for best picture. Critics' choice went to My Favorite Cake.

Berlin Film Festival has been criticized for becoming more like the bigger and more popular film festivals, like Venice and Cannes. However, by giving the top prize to a film with a political message, the film festival has re-emphasized its focus on different and less mainstream cinema.

A Berlinale judge implied the film festival is a haven for films deemed unsuitable for other platforms. This notion was reinforced by awarding Best film Director to "Pepe," a creative film about Pablo Escobar's hippos, which is both entertaining and unconventional.

At the recent awards ceremony, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East dominated the spotlight, overshadowing the festive atmosphere. Many award winners and judges used their platform to urge for a ceasefire in Gaza, expressing their strong stance on the issue. Among them, American film director Ben Russell donned a keffiyeh, a symbol of Palestinian identity, while accepting his award for Best Film. The unexpected winner, Diop, joined the chorus of voices voicing solidarity with Palestine.
