At the age of 16, Johnny Peña became the youngest student in the history of the Instituto Superior de de las Arte in Havana.
Peña studied film at the Institute for 2 years until he was suspended for writing an article criticizing the Castro regime in the Cuban dissident media outlet "Hypermedia Magazine."
Before leaving Cuba, Peña managed to record the first protest in 30 years that was relatively unknown by the Cuban public and spent 2 years waiting to add more footage of new protests because he believed that the Cuban people would initiate more uprisings. He used all the historic footage to turn them into a compendium of the Cuban resistance and that became the documentary known as "Corojo Roto", all on a no-budget basis.
He premiered the documentary in November 27th, 2022 at the Tower Theater Miami.
Peña is currently living in Miami and states that he is currently working on fictional projects now.
