Director's Biography
Fokiya Akhtar has over two decades of combined experience as an educator-scholar and filmmaker. Professor of Film and Video at the College of Communication and Media Sciences at Zayed University, Dubai, UAE. She has worked as a Freelance Producer/Director and has produced educational documentaries and instructional television programs for the University Grants Commission countrywide classroom in New Delhi. Ms. Akhtar has produced and directed independent documentary films and documentaries, live shows, game shows, and current affairs programs for various television channels.
Her documentaries have won awards at prestigious film festivals across the world. Her documentary An Gorta Mór: Passage to India (2019) on Irish migration during the 1847 Potato famine won awards of Best Documentary, Best Women Filmmaker, jury award, and Outstanding Achievement award at the Tokyo Film Festival, White Unicorn International Film Festival, Spring Cine Fest Prestigious Golden Galaxy Awards, Indian Film Festival of Ireland, Wonderland International Film Festival of Australia, Indian Cine Film Festival and University Film and Video Association of professors, scholars, film and video makers. Her film “All Alone and Lonely” on women and children in conflict won the best documentary award at the Golden Gate Fiction & Documentary Festival, San Fransisco Film Festival, and Mumbai International Film Festival. Her Screenplay Attic Boys (2021) won best screenplay awards at World Film Carnival-Singapore, Virgin Spring Cine Festival, Madras International Festival, Golden Merlion Award, and Cult-Critic Movie Award.
