Director's Biography
Film director Karolis Jankus was born in Vilnius in 1974, but grew up in Australia, near the former aboriginal reserve in New South Wales. He spent his childhood with the children of ANDI Aboriginal clans. His specific view of the world formed there. In 1989-1991, he came to Western Europe, where he got acquainted with the achievements of contemporary art in Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Duisburg, and communicated with experimental film artists from Japan in Paris. In 1991 he moved to Vilnius, where he entered the art academy. In 1997, he dropped out of the art academy and went to Paris to make his first documentary film "Ils vous baisent la main" about the racist atmosphere in the suburbs of Paris at the time, which was mostly shot with a hidden camera. In 2003-2004, short films "Dead body asks for help", "Girl and Bones" were presented at Encounters Short Film Festival in Bristol, Sitges Film Festival in Barcelona. In 2007, he created his first full-length feature film "Jesus from Lithuania". it shows Jesus as a creature who does not adhere to any moral standards. After the film's premiere, distribution in cinemas is canceled, even contemporary art centers refuse to show the film. Until 2010, there is no information about the creative activity of the director. He returned to Australia and later spent time in Tokyo where he was arrested by the police for fighting in the street. He appeared in Vilnius in 2013 and filmed a 7-hour long documentary film poem "The Silent Lithuanian Revolution" about social distancing and revolutionary moods in Lithuania at that time. From 2019 to 2022, he lives in Barcelona, where he finishes the full-length documentary "Biological Loneliness" about the inhuman constraints during covid-19.
