In this cinematic work Ricardo Praga continues to display his fascination with jester-like figures and flamboyance amid glorious but tattered European streets. Circles takes us on a surreal journey based in dream, reiterating many the ideas key to Praga’s photographic works in a moving-image format.
The narrative itself unfolds ambiguously, moving between two central scenes—a colourfully-dressed woman walking her jester-on-a-leash who breaks free, and a pair of women dancing in the city before being confronted by to others who proceed to bash them with pillows. The dream-like trance the images holds are somewhat held up by the use of the iconic Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy which glues the disparate, almost hallucinogenic, scenes together.
