Director's Biography
Jere Valdevit was born in 1976 in Zagreb, Croatia. A classically trained musician, music teacher and jazz composer, he studied at the Music Academy in Zagreb, performing with Il Gruppo delle Azioni Progressive (G.A.P. Quartet) and composing original works for piano, strings, and orchestra.
He developed a passion for filmmaking while studying under Ognjen Sviličić at Kino Klub Zagreb, creating the feature Balkansko trojstvo (Balkan Trinity), which established him as an independent filmmaker, followed by the short film Interview and the feature High on Life.
Director's Statement
I chose to write and direct this movie because of certain autobiographical elements woven throughout the characters and the story itself.
While watching this film, I wanted the viewer to experience the musician's way of life, the challenges of that kind of existence and the inevitability of destiny.
Some of the challenges of making this film included securing independent financing and negotiating shooting dates with cast and crew members who had day jobs and other obligations to coordinate.
In creating this film, I was inspired by the works of many wonderful filmmakers, but I must mention David Lynch, Mel Brooks, and John Carpenter as my major influences.
Working with these actors and actresses was special because most of them are my musician friends and colleagues — “brothers in arms”, so to speak.
We experienced many delays while making this film due to the small budget and the aforementioned work obligations of the cast and crew, but we managed to wrap it up in three and a half years.
I was fortunate to raise the funds for this film myself, with the wonderful help of my friend and colleague, co-producer Mladen Lukiški.
Working on this film — my second feature — will help me with future projects because of the knowledge and experience I gained while making it.
