Director's Biography
Lai Cheuk Nam is an emerging director and visual artist dedicated to exploring the boundaries of experimental narrative and the aesthetics of Film Noir. His work, characterized by its stark monochrome language and profound atmospheric tension, delves into the complexities of human existence and the silent struggle for survival.
With a unique cinematic voice, Lai Cheuk Nam has garnered significant international acclaim across three continents. His award-winning film, STRAY DOG, achieved the highest honors as the Winner of the Golden Capybara for Best Experimental Film at the Tietê International Film Awards (Brazil) and received the Special Jury Award at the Incheon International Single-Frame Film Festival (South Korea). His works have been officially selected for screenings in cultural hubs such as St. Petersburg, the United Kingdom, and Romania. Lai Cheuk Nam strives to strip away conventional dialogue to return to the primal, sensory power of cinema, establishing himself as a formidable new voice in the global independent film scene.
Director's Statement
STRAY DOG
Cinema, at its most primal level, is an art of light and shadow. In creating STRAY DOG, my intention was to strip away the "noise" of modern storytelling—the saturation of color, the density of dialogue, and the comfort of clear morality—to return to the visceral essence of the moving image.
The choice of a stark, high-contrast monochrome aesthetic is not merely a stylistic preference, but a philosophical necessity. Black and white allows the audience to transcend the specifics of time and place, focusing instead on the rhythmic tension between the body and the environment. The protagonist, much like the titular creature, exists in a "state of exception," navigating a world that has rendered him invisible.
Through this film, I sought to explore the "wildness" that remains within us when civilization recedes. By utilizing minimalist narrative structures and atmospheric soundscapes, STRAY DOG aims to serve as a visual testimony for the solitary and the marginalized—the "wretched of the earth" who find their strength in the shadows.
Winning the Golden Capybara and the Special Jury Award across different continents has reaffirmed my belief that the language of silence is universal. This film is my attempt to capture the haunting beauty of survival, proving that even in the darkest void, there is a gaze that refuses to be extinguished.
