Director's Biography
Russ Emanuel is an award-winning American director, producer, and independent filmmaker, having directed such actors as John Heard, Robert Picardo, Vincent Pastore, Glynnis O'Connor, Hallie Kate Eisenberg, Jeremy London, Ryan Hurst, William Devane, Marina Sirtis, Sean Kenney, Armin Shimerman, and Gary Graham. He grew up in both Japan and the United States and graduated from U.S.C. to study Cinema-Television. He founded Russem Productions in 2002 to promote his films including GIRL WITH GUN (2005) and documentary RESTORATION OF PARADISE (2014). Presently, STAYCATION (2022) - the sequel to ROUTINE currently being filmed - marks Emanuel's sixth foray into feature filmmaking, after directing P.J. (2007), CHASING THE GREEN (2009), THE LEGENDS OF NETHIAH (2012), OCCUPANTS (2015), and WISPER (2020). And THE ASSASSIN'S APPRENTICE II is Emanuel's first sequel film he has directed.
Director's Statement
It’s always a pleasure to get back into the action genre, and even more so when making a sequel to the very successful film “The Assassin’s Apprentice” which won numerous awards in the film festival circuit. As was the case in the first TAA film, which featured Star Trek’s Robert Picardo and Marina Sirtis, our new film also features veteran Star Trek actors, including Armin Shimerman (Quark of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Gary Graham (Vulcan Ambassador Soval of Star Trek: Enterprise), Sean Kenney (injured Captain Pike from the original Star Trek series), and Tracee Cocco (background regular on numerous Star Trek TV Shows and three of the Next Generation movies). It was my great pleasure to work again with my wonderful producers Ryan T. Husk and Howard Nash along with the amazing writer, showrunner and executive producer Paul Hickman.
Like the making of any film, this one had its fair number of challenges, but result exceeded my expectations. I had the pleasure of working with a great crew including my Director of Photography Scotty Baker, Editor Trevor Mayes, Composer Vasilis Milesis (whom I worked with since 2014), Production Designer Gladys Rodriguez, Key Costumer Nina Minnelli, Key Makeup Artist Alisha L. Baijounas, Still Photographers Janeen Berryman and Jack Roth, and Drone Operator Kevin Benson, among many others.
Employing amazing visual effects work by Tommy Kraft, Trevor Mayes, and Tobias Richter’s company The Light Works, as well as deeply immersive 5.1 surround sound and extraordinary foley work by Sean Fahimian (whom I worked with since 2005), we are magically transported to a fast-paced adventure in Spain’s Canary Islands.
I have worked with many of the cast and crew before, while others were new. But we are all part of a family and I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed being part of this group. I hope you enjoy this film as much as I had making it!
