Director's Biography
Elaine Lim is a Singaporean filmmaker and visual storyteller making her directorial debut with The Girl and Her Piano, a cinematic short documentary that follows her daughter’s extraordinary journey into the 4,000-metre-highlands of Bhutan. The film powerfully combines music, landscape, and narrative to raise awareness of the urgent climate crisis through the universal language of piano.
Elaine is also the Creative Director and Co-founder of White Room Studio, one of Singapore’s most acclaimed portrait photography ateliers. With over 16 years of professional experience in photography, she has built a reputation for her emotionally resonant, artful approach to visual storytelling, an ethos that translates seamlessly into her filmmaking.
In The Girl and Her Piano, Elaine draws on her extensive background in portraiture and environmental storytelling to produce a work that is as intimate as it is epic. Set against the vast and sacred Himalayan landscapes, the film is a meditation on youth, courage, and the power of art to transcend borders and inspire climate consciousness.
This debut project is not only a personal exploration of motherhood and mentorship, it is also Elaine’s call to action. Through her lens, she frames the urgency of our times with quiet grace and visual poetry, marking her emergence as a filmmaker with both vision and voice.
Director's Statement
'The Girl and Her Piano' began as a quiet vision of my daughter, a young pianist, bringing her music to the remote highlands of Bhutan. What started as a personal journey quickly became something larger: a story about youth, courage, and the power of art to speak where words fall short.
As a photographer, I’ve spent years capturing human stories through still images. But this was different. I felt compelled to move into film to explore something deeper: how sound and silence, landscape and emotion, can come together to express an urgent truth about our planet. In an age of climate fatigue, I wanted to offer a more poetic lens, a cinematic film that stirs hearts, not just minds.
Bhutan’s untouched beauty, its spiritual stillness, provided the perfect setting. There, at 4,000 metres above sea level, my daughter played just not for an audience, including the Kind of Bhutan, but also for nature itself.
This film is my directorial debut, but in many ways, it’s also a return to storytelling with purpose. I hope 'The Girl and Her Piano' resonates with anyone who believes that small voices, when guided by intention and beauty, can echo powerfully in the places that matter most.
