Synopsis:

Tagore’s first awareness of America was through literature. He was a 12 year old, when he read, with his father's guidance, the biography of Benjamin Franklin. It took 40 years more for Tagore to physically reach the shores of America. From 1912 to 1930, he crossed the seas to America five times, each journey marked by stirring encounters with the era’s brightest minds. His visits to the country more than a century ago constitute an important chapter in the history of Indo American relationships.
Tagore's passage to America, and America's discovery of India through him acted as a catalyst to gradual achievement of his vision: a single civilization and culture in which the great minds of each nation will be directly accessible to all men. Eight decades later, with the rise of jingoism and hostile foreign policies in many parts of the globe, Tagore’s luminous words of caution still ring true in the modern consciousness.
