Director's Biography

Hugo Teugels is an independent filmmaker driven by imagery, music and myth. A visual storyteller with a background in photography, he writes, shoots, edits and shapes his films with a painter’s eye and a composer’s ear — a multi-award-winning hybrid of producer, director, editor, cinematographer, and sound-focused creator.

Early recognition came with Set Me Free (Cannes Short Film Corner, 2011), followed by Hoko-Bang-Sing (2014) and The Queen (2016) — the latter, written during his studies at the New York Film Academy, went on to earn more than 100 awards worldwide. 2nd Chance (2019) later reached international distribution and deepened his reputation for emotionally charged cinematic work.

Over 15 years as a soundtrack critic forged his signature style: dreamlike imagery, controlled atmosphere and sound as narrative pulse, often drawing comparisons to surrealist cinema and the textured worlds of David Lynch.

His current and most ambitious artistic universe is Cassandra Venice — a mythic climate-reflection set in a drowning Venice.
Beginning with dual trailers in 2023 and continuing through multiple award-winning short film iterations, the project evolved into the hybrid AI-enhanced short When Cassandra Venice Speaks (2025), winner of Best A.I. Generated Film in Marbella and now traveling globally in festival circuits throughout 2025–2026. Expansion into long-form form concepts is in active development.

Teugels continues to create independently — moving between Venice, Spain and Belgium — crafting atmospheric cinema where water, prophecy and the human psyche meet.

Director's Statement

*** CASSANDRA VENICE universe — A Vision Rising from the Water - HISTORY *** >> BELOW.

The idea originated in 2021, when I returned from the Lido to the centre of Venice every night after the festival and found myself back in the silent labyrinth of streets and waterways, shaping the story in my Lynchean mind as the climactic cues grew stronger. In 2022, during the next Venice IFF, I discovered the perfect leading lady (Polli Cannabis) and we booked a few days to film in Venice. Again in 2023, during VIFF, we filmed the final footage and tested the red carpet together. Then the project grew to maturity."

Why this story?

The story of Venice is a universal one, resonating through history with its unparalleled beauty, cultural richness, and timeless splendor. This city, suspended between water and sky, serves as a poignant symbol of both human achievement and vulnerability. Its delicate balance reminds us of the mythical Atlantis, a civilization lost to the depths of the sea, and the Minotaur's labyrinth from Greek mythology, representing complex challenges and the struggle to find our way.

Venice's history is a testament to human ingenuity and resilience, yet it stands at a critical juncture. Like Atlantis, Venice faces the threat of submersion due to rising sea levels, a direct consequence of our changing climate. The tale of Atlantis serves as a cautionary reminder of what can happen when we ignore environmental signals and fail to act. It is a call to awareness, urging us to recognize the fragility of our world and the impact of our actions.

The Minotaur's labyrinth, with its intricate twists and turns, symbolizes the convoluted path we tread as we confront climate change. Just as Theseus faced the Minotaur, we are confronted with the daunting task of navigating our way through a maze of environmental challenges. This mythological struggle mirrors our current reality, where the beauty of places like Venice is at stake, and the consequences of inaction are dire.

Are we aware of the climate problems we face? Consciously or unconsciously, the signs are all around us. Extreme weather events, melting glaciers, and rising sea levels are not just abstract concepts but tangible realities that affect our daily lives. Yet, there is often a disconnect between this awareness and our actions. Like the citizens of Atlantis who were blind to their impending doom, we sometimes fail to grasp the urgency of the situation.

Venice, with its precarious existence, urges us to confront our environmental responsibilities. The city's struggle against the encroaching waters is a powerful metaphor for our global fight against climate change. It compels us to shift from unconscious neglect to conscious action. By recognizing the parallels between these universal stories and our current predicament, we can harness the lessons of the past to forge a sustainable future.

In this narrative, Venice becomes a beacon of hope and a stark reminder. Its history and beauty inspire us, while its vulnerabilities call us to action. The myths of Atlantis and the Minotaur remind us of the consequences of inaction and the importance of courage and ingenuity. As we face the climate challenges of our time, let us be aware, let us be conscious, and let us act decisively to protect our world for future generations.

You don't need a golden spoon to stir in your cup, just dwell on this thought the next time you have a cup.

*** CASSANDRA VENICE universe — A Vision Rising from the Water - HISTORY ***

Cassandra Venice is an internationally awarded cinematic universe merging mythology with climate urgency. Built through trailers (2023), a multi-award-winning short (2024), and a hybrid A.I. iteration (2025), the concept culminates in the new 17-minute short When Cassandra Venice Speaks — completed January 2026 and now entering its global festival
path. Alongside its artistic recognition, the project is actively growing a community through online storytelling, press presence, and live events, creating anticipation for the next step.

Designed as a proof of concept for a larger feature or limited series, Cassandra Venice stands positioned at the intersection of art and environmental relevance — visually poetic, audience-driven, and ready for the next scale of production.

Overview
Born from myth, forged in the labyrinth of Venice, Cassandra Venice is an evolving
cinematic universe that bridges art, film, and environmental awareness. What began as two
experimental trailers in 2023 has grown into an internationally acclaimed project, blending
mythology, climate urgency, and human emotion through both classical filmmaking and
cutting-edge A.I. techniques.

The Journey
• 2023 – The Blue & Red Trailers
Two mirror fragments of one mythic story — The Blue Trailer, evoking the silent call of the
sea goddess Amphitrite, and The Red Trailer, capturing the human side of Cassandra,
cursed to see the truth no one believes.
Together, they won more than 100 international awards, positioning Cassandra Venice as a
visionary independent work rooted in Venice’s mysterious atmosphere and mythology.

• 2024 – The Short Film (21 min)
The project evolved into a poetic short film exploring the duality of Cassandra — torn
between her “Blue” and “Red” inner worlds.
Widely acclaimed across global festivals, the 2024 film received over 350 international
awards, solidifying Cassandra Venice as one of the most successful independent shorts of its kind.

• 2025 – The Hybrid Vision (October)
A 1-minute Hybrid Trailer introduced Navina — the child with the paper boat, symbol of
innocence and fragile hope in a drowning world.
The 16-minute hybrid short film premiered at the Marbella International Film Festival, winning Best A.I.-Generated Film, followed by a Masked After-Party that immersed
guests in its mythic universe. This hybrid cut — merging live action and A.I. — served as a bridge to refine tone, emotion,
and story direction.

• 2025 – When Cassandra Venice Speaks
Completed in January 2026, this new 17-minute short stands as the definitive chapter of the
current cycle — finalized and festival-ready for its international run from January 2026 onward.
It gives Cassandra her voice at last — where prophecy, climate, and conscience entwine into a final reflection on truth, denial, and survival. A natural evolution of Hugo Teugels’ award-winning style, blending dreamlike
cinematography with sound-driven narrative and A.I.-enriched mythic imagery.

Growing the World
Beyond the screen, Cassandra Venice is building its own audience and universe — slowly growing an engaged community online, across film festivals, articles, interviews, and live events.
Each release invites viewers deeper into the labyrinth, cultivating curiosity and expectation around what comes next. This momentum nurtures a foundation of followers, collaborators, and future viewers — essential as the larger project is being written and prepared.

The Vision Ahead
Cassandra Venice now stands as a proof of concept for future expansion — toward a
feature film or limited series.
A modern myth about truth, water, and the climate unfolding around us, continuing to evolve
while asking:
When the water rises again… will we listen this time?
