Makarand Waikar, a passionate filmmaker, found his love for the art through his engagement with global film screenings, discussions, and courses at prestigious institutions like FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) and NFAI (National Film Archive of India) in Pune (India). His journey into the world of cinema began when he dedicated over two years to developing a concept and conducting extensive field research on the topic of Radio.
Director's Statement
In early 2021, Makarand Waikar, Co-Director (and producer), developed the idea of TimeCap Documentaries to capture the essence of lives, moments, traditions, and practices from the recent past and preserve them for generations to come.
Radio played an important role and influenced the lives of people globally before the advent of television. Inspired by his own nostalgic memories of radios in his childhood, Makarand is passionately driven to explore the lives of individuals who were deeply connected to this medium.
He believes that a chance encounter or an incident in life can play a big role in the future. But do people notice it? Will someone pursue it sincerely to the extent that it becomes part of their subconscious mind, and when opportunity comes in life, they pursue it and make a career, hobby or lifestyle out of it? Makarand reached out to Bidit Roy, a seasoned documentary filmmaker, to Co-direct the film. Bidit has always been fascinated by the ways people derive joy from the simplest of things.
Bidit could relate to the radio as he grew up in the television era of the 1990s in India, back when there were only a couple of channels to sift through. He realised the much deeper impact the simple gadget Radio has had on people. In today's mad rush to get things, do we really pause in life and take some time to reflect, introspect, and own the decision that results from it?
Together, the directors and the research team explored various aspects of radio and potential characters for the film.
Through the captivating human stories depicted in the film, our collective aim is to rediscover our former selves, find joy in life's small moments, and evoke nostalgia for the past, all while preserving this era for generations to come.
